PHNOM PENH: As the Royal Government is formed anew with a fresh batch of ministers and the first new prime minister in nearly 40 years, members of the old regime are already moving on to their next roles as advisors and leaders in other political bodies. Former Prime Minister Hun Sen and former National Assembly President, Heng Samrin, were appointed by the King as the President and Honorary Chairman of the Supreme Council of the King today.

The appointments were made in a royal decree on August 22, just hours after the National Assembly voted in favour of the new government, led by Prime Minister Hun Manet. In the decree, the king recognized the outgoing prime minister’s respect and love for the people. He said that he trusts in Hun Sen’s ability to protect democracy and promote national peace stability and unity. The king also noted his respect for the principles of Buddhism and the freedom of religions as cause for the appointment.

According to the king, Hun Sen’s demonstrated loyalty to the Cambodian monarchy makes him fit to act as President of his Supreme Council. As such, Hun Sen will be the de facto Head of State when the king is abroad.

Additionally, former National Assembly President Heng Samrin was designated as the Charman of the Council, while former ministers Sar Kheng, Tea Banh and Men Sam An were named as personal advisors to the king with the rank of deputy prime minister.
